We conducted a 5-year retrospective case review of all congenital syphilis cases in Alameda County from 2019 to 2023. During this period, 57 infants were born with congenital syphilis to 54 birthing persons, representing a 218% increase over time.

Prepared by the Alameda County Public Health Department’s Community Assessment, Planning, and Evaluation (CAPE) unit, this report describes changes in mortality from 2018-2019 to 2020-2021, the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report describes growing disparities in life expectancy, and overall mortality by race, ethnicity, and neighborhood poverty. An FAQ document and presentation slides have been created to accompany this report.
